Comment on More Fruit Trees by Helen Koenig1

Uhm! I didn’t see any apples in your list of fruits?
Re trees fruiting – when I lived on the farm I planted crab apples, plums, cherry trees, peaches and a bunch of native fruits like persimmon, beach plums, as well as blackberries and blueberries. NOTHING – absolutely NOTHING happened during the entire time I lived on the farm. Oh the crabapples bloomed like something gone crazy – but NO fruit. NADA – no matter how much fertilizer (goat and cow poop, wood ashes, LOTS of compost) I added to the soil around the trees. NOTHING – until the year after I moved. Then the plums went insane, the beach plums bore blossoms and fruit like something possessed, and the crabapples were so loaded with blossoms and later fruit that the limbs were bowed down. My grapes were in harvest heaven. AFTER I MOVED! Drat it!
Here I have one lonely pear tree – has borne 2 (yup – 2) pears – both of which vanished (I really hope the upstairs tenants had a bellyache!) The apples, peach, and cherry tree are still too young. The blueberries got whacked by the lawnmower guy. BUT I had strawberries, A blackberry (yup – ONE!), and some raspberries last year and was pleased to get that (not overjoyed – but pleased!)
