We drive old cars, buy things we might not need, grow as much of our own food as possible and are having a $10,000 fence installed. Why? Because we love our way of life (and our dogs) No, we don’t have to do any of it, we could live in the city and buy at the grocery store, but there is just something about being able to be independent, esp when you’re over 70/80 that makes it so satisfactory.
